The Ornamental Pond Challenge in Portugal

A pond losing water is a maintenance nightmare. The causes are multiple: UV-degraded membranes, punctures from aquatic plant roots, cracks from soil movement, and PVC liners that leach toxic plasticisers into the water around fish. In Portugal the problem is especially acute: the intense summers of the Centre and South degrade PVC within 5 to 10 years, while the clay soils of the Interior create movements that crack concrete structures.

  • Common PVC liners become brittle from UV in 5-10 years and tear easily at the edges
  • PVC plasticisers DEHP and DBP leach into the water and disrupt the endocrine system of koi
  • Roots of aquatic and marginal plants penetrate low-resistance membranes
  • Cracked concrete in existing ponds loses 200-500 litres per day and is impossible to repair permanently
  • Soil movement from frost, severe drought or differential settlement creates cracks that no sealant fixes definitively

The EPDM Solution for Ornamental Ponds

EPDM is the reference membrane for high-quality ornamental ponds worldwide. Its absolute biological safety for koi, cold-water fish and aquatic plants has been proven in continuous use since the 1980s. The 400% elasticity conforms to any organic shape, planting shelves and waterfalls without visible seams. Membriko, a specialist installer based in Pombal, installs EPDM with a 20-year warranty and technical support across Portugal.

  • Zero plasticisers — EPDM is formulated without DEHP, DBP or any low-molecular-weight plasticiser
  • 400% elasticity conforms to any organic pond shape, islands, bays and planting shelves
  • Native UV resistance built into the EPDM molecular structure — does not depend on additives that deplete
  • Compatible with biological filtration systems, waterfalls, submersible pumps and all pond equipment
  • Membriko 20-year warranty and documented service life exceeding 50 years in European installations

EPDM Benefits

Biologically Safe for Koi and Fish

EPDM releases no plasticisers or organochlorine compounds into the water. Certified safe for Nishikigoi koi, carp, coldwater fish and all aquatic plants. In continuous use in competition koi ponds since the 1980s.

Superior Native UV Resistance

EPDM's UV resistance is intrinsic to its elastomeric composition — it does not depend on UV additives that deplete. While PVC liners age, stiffen and tear in 5-10 years under the Portuguese sun, EPDM remains flexible for 50+ years.

Adapts to Any Organic Geometry

Ponds with gentle curves, bays, islands, multi-level planting shelves and waterfalls are covered by one or a few EPDM sheets with invisible seams. 400% elasticity guarantees perfect aesthetic results.

Frost and Heat Resistance

EPDM maintains full flexibility from -45°C to +50°C. Mountain ponds that freeze in winter (Gerês, Serra da Estrela, Montemuro) do not damage the membrane — unlike concrete that cracks and rigid PVC that fractures.

Absolute and Lasting Watertightness

A correctly installed Membriko EPDM pond loses no water. Elimination of frequent top-ups that waste water, upset pH and stress fish. Pond biology stabilises within weeks when there are no level fluctuations.

Very Low Whole-Life Cost

Install EPDM once and maintain for 50 years. Accumulated maintenance cost is zero compared with PVC liners that require replacement every 8-12 years. For a koi pond with valuable fish, the EPDM liner cost is negligible against the value of the fish it protects.

Installation Process

  1. 1

    Survey and Pond Design

Site visit for layout of intended form, depth by zone (swimming zone, marginal planting shelf, deep koi refuge zone), volume calculation, filtration system design, waterfall location and pipe entry points. Membrane cut calculation to minimise seams.

  2. 2

    Excavation with Correct Profile

Excavation with a stepped profile — marginal shelf at 30 cm depth for aquatic plants, swimming zone at 60-80 cm, deep refuge zone for koi at 120-150 cm. Wall inclination at 20-30° for better membrane conformity. Complete removal of stones, roots and sharp objects.

  3. 3

    Substrate Preparation and Protective Geotextile

Compaction and levelling of soil. Installation of a 50 mm washed sand layer on the base. Placement of 300 g/m² non-woven protective geotextile over all excavated surfaces — protection against residual stones and future root growth. The geotextile runs up the walls and over the edges.

  4. 4

    EPDM Membrane Cutting and Pre-forming

EPDM membrane cut as a single piece where possible (ponds up to ~15 m wide in one direction). For larger ponds, seams planned at positions of least mechanical stress (flat base, not at corners or transitions). Internal corners pre-formed with EPDM adhesive before positioning.

  5. 5

    Membrane Installation and Forming

EPDM membrane unrolled over the protective geotextile. Careful hand-forming to all shelves, curves and transition zones — 400% elasticity allows forming without pre-tensioning. Excess membrane left at edges (minimum 300 mm) for anchoring. Temporary stones placed to hold membrane in position.

  6. 6

    Seams with QuickSeam System

For ponds with multiple EPDM sheets, seams executed with EPDM contact adhesive and QuickSeam tape with 150 mm overlap. Surfaces cleaned with QuickPrime Plus, primer applied, curing time observed, pressure applied with roller. All seams manually inspected and visually checked before filling.

  7. 7

    Pipes, Drains and Penetrations

Installation of EPDM pipe penetration accessories for bottom drain, filter return, pump feed and waterfall. Sealed with EPDM adhesive and stainless steel clamps. Each penetration tested individually before filling. Bottom drain is essential for cleaning the pond without full emptying.

  8. 8

    Edge Anchoring and Final Finishing

Membrane fixed at edges with stainless steel anchor profile or secured under decorative stones, paving or treated timber edging. Excess membrane cut after anchoring. Gradual pond filling — level monitored over 72 hours. Once stable, pond substrate, aquatic plants added, and after 2 weeks of biological maturation, fish introduced.

Installation Techniques

Free-Laid Membrane with Protective Geotextile — Garden Ponds

Classic method for ornamental ponds in residential gardens and boutique hotels. The EPDM membrane is placed freely over protective geotextile without bonding to the substrate. The weight of water (1 kg/litre) keeps the membrane in place with sufficient force for any organic shape. Recommended for irregularly shaped ponds with many curves and planting shelves.

Vantagens

  • Fast installation in 1-2 days for ponds up to 100 m²
  • Membrane accommodates future soil settlement without risk of failure
  • Single piece without seams for ponds up to ~230 m² (15.25 m × 15.25 m)
  • Easy removal for design alteration or localised repair
  • Base substrate (gravel, sand, rooted plants) can be added directly over the membrane

Desvantagens

  • Requires robust protective geotextile to prevent punctures from stones or roots
  • Not suitable for ponds with heavy surface runoff that could displace the membrane
  • Edges require careful anchoring to prevent slippage under water tension

Bonded Membrane for Concrete Pond Rehabilitation

Solution for rehabilitating existing cracked concrete ponds, formal water features with straight edges, and waterfalls with vertical walls. EPDM is bonded to the existing concrete structure with specific contact adhesive. Eliminates demolition and reconstruction. The membrane follows existing cracks without creating stress points.

Vantagens

  • Definitive rehabilitation of cracked concrete ponds without demolition
  • Excellent adhesion on vertical walls and steeply inclined surfaces
  • Suitable for formal water features and waterfalls with defined geometry
  • Covers existing concrete cracks without prior crack repair
  • The deep black EPDM surface enhances water reflection and visual depth

Desvantagens

  • Requires structurally stable concrete — active cracks continue to move
  • Concrete preparation (cleaning, primer) increases cost and installation time
  • Not suitable for concrete structures with advanced carbonation

Natural Swimming Pond (Schwimmteich) with EPDM

A growing concept in Portugal: the natural swimming pond (Schwimmteich) that combines a swimming zone and a biological regeneration zone with aquatic plants. EPDM is the reference membrane for this concept precisely because it is biologically inert. The regeneration zone with aquatic plants (Phragmites, Typha, Nuphar) functions as a natural biological filter without chemicals.

Vantagens

  • Swimming pool without chlorine or chemicals — filtration performed by macrophytes
  • Full landscape integration into the garden — appears as a natural lake
  • EPDM biologically inert and does not interfere with the natural filtration ecosystem
  • Lower long-term maintenance cost than a conventional pool
  • Habitat for beneficial fauna — frogs, dragonflies, water birds

Desvantagens

  • Requires greater area than a conventional pool (swimming zone + planting zone)
  • Biological maturation period of 2-3 years to reach full ecosystem balance
  • Water may have temporary natural turbidity during periods of intense heat (algal bloom)

Performance in the Portuguese Climate

Minho and Douro Litoral — Moderate Frost and Abundant Rainfall

The humid North is excellent for ornamental ponds with lush aquatic plants and cold-water fish. Occasional temperatures of -5°C to -8°C in higher valleys do not damage EPDM. Abundant rainfall (>1,200 mm/year) keeps the pond level naturally stable.

Serra da Estrela and Central Massif — Severe Frost

Ponds in mountain areas above 600 m freeze partially or completely in winter. EPDM is the only material that withstands repeated freeze-thaw cycles without cracking. Concrete cracks inevitably; PVC fractures. For mountain ponds, EPDM is the only durable option.

Greater Lisbon and Setúbal — Intense UV and Quality Koi

The Lisbon Metropolitan Area and Setúbal Peninsula have the highest density of high-quality koi ponds in Portugal. The dry, hot climate (>2,800 sun hours/year) is the most demanding for liners. EPDM resists UV without degradation while PVC liners fail within 5-8 years.

Alentejo and Interior — Expansive Clay Soils

The clay soils of Alentejo and the Interior expand and contract with seasonal moisture. EPDM's 400% elongation accommodates these movements without creating stress. Concrete ponds in these soils invariably crack within 3-7 years of use.

Algarve — Boutique Hotels and Feature Ponds

The Algarve has the highest density of boutique hotels with ornamental ponds in Portugal. Feature ponds at 5-star resorts demand zero maintenance and immaculate appearance. Deep black EPDM intensifies water reflection and visual depth — a superior landscaping effect compared to any other material.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. EPDM is the reference material for competition koi ponds worldwide. Its composition contains no plasticisers (DEHP, DBP, DINP) or organochlorine compounds. High-end Japanese and European koi breeders have used EPDM as standard for over 30 years. By contrast, low-cost PVC liners leach plasticisers that disrupt the endocrine systems of fish and can cause mortality in valuable koi.

For ponds with Nishikigoi koi or other valuable fish, we always recommend 1.5 mm — the higher tear resistance protects against accidents during maintenance and sharp decorative stones at the edges. For plant ponds without fish or water lily ponds, 1.0 mm is sufficient and more economical. For mixed projects (plants and fish), we choose 1.5 mm.

With new EPDM, we wait 3-5 days of filling and stabilisation for water pH and temperature to normalise. There is no risk of chemical migration because EPDM has no plasticisers. By comparison, new concrete requires 90 days of curing and multiple washes to reach a pH safe for fish.

Yes — this is one of the most common applications for Membriko. EPDM is bonded to the existing concrete with specific adhesive, covering all cracks without demolition. The result is definitive — EPDM follows residual concrete movement without cracking. The cost is 40-60% lower than demolition and reconstruction.

Maintenance of an EPDM pond is identical to any ornamental pond. The membrane itself requires no maintenance — only the filtration equipment, pump and water quality need attention. For base cleaning, a pond vacuum can be used without risk of damage to EPDM, which is highly resistant to abrasion from gravel and substrate.

Yes — accidental tears and punctures can be repaired in situ with an EPDM patch and QuickSeam adhesive, without emptying the pond (small tears can be repaired underwater using a specific subaquatic technique). Larger tears require partial emptying. The repair carries a 10-year warranty and is permanent.

No. EPDM is chemically inert and does not alter pH, hardness, alkalinity or any water quality parameter. The deep black colour of the membrane creates the "infinite depth" visual effect greatly valued in Japanese koi ponds and decorative water features. This opacity also inhibits algae growth on the pond walls.

We recommend a minimum of 1.2 m at the deepest point for koi ponds — depth that allows fish to shelter from summer heat and maintain stable temperature. For large koi (>60 cm), 1.5 m is preferable. EPDM adapts to any depth without technical limitation.
